About This Event
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives National Day of Theatre Readings This year, visiting Indigenous and Latinx artists will join us at Colorado College to participate in a week-long monologue writing workshop prior to the event. The artists will then perform two staged readings of existing works: Marcie Rendon’s “Say Their Names” and Jeff Barehand and Jaisey Bates’ “Never Be Afraid”. They will also perform chosen monologues and pieces developed during the workshop, alongside Colorado College theatre and dance students. Coordinated by the Native Performing Arts Network, dozens of theatres and universities across the U.S. will present readings and performances to highlight the MMIWR crisis on May 5th, focusing on plays by Indigenous writers to honor victims and advocate for justice. These productions are a form of activism, aimed at fighting the statistical erasure of Indigenous folks and the lack of media coverage. With a rolling entry, all are welcome to drop in and join us anytime on May 5th at the Fine Arts Center Taste Room between 3:30-6pm. Light bites will be served, with the performance beginning at 4pm. May 5 | 3:30-6pm Fine Arts Center Taste Room The National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives is held annually on May 5th to honor victims and survivors, and to highlight the disproportionate violence against Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people. Indigenous women face murder rates over 10 times the national average, with an average of 4 out of 5 experiencing violence in their lifetime, according to VA.gov. 95% of Indigenous folks who go missing in the US do not make the national news.
