Dreamscapes — Colorado Springs event
May 30, 2026, 4:00 AM

Dreamscapes

Cottonwood Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a juried exhibition for the month of May featuring works in response to an open call to the public: “Dreamscapes” Human beings spend roughly 33% of their lives sleeping, which equates to around 26 years. Accounting for the average time spent falling asleep, you will spend 33 years of your life in bed. I have dreamt my entire life about a farmhouse on the plains – one I have never seen before. I have dreamt my entire life about a mountain pass at sunset that doesn’t exist, it runs alongside a cold river. I dream of impossible and terrifying storms in the sky, the smell of a pine forest, water, highways. I dream in faded blues and yellows. What do you dream, what have you seen, and what pieces of it do you carry with you? For this call we asked artists to analyze and celebrate our unconscious lives. The worn-out edges of visions we grasp at every morning, and the colors and shapes you sort through when explaining them. Non-representational and representational works were accepted for this call. Entries of all mediums and styles were accepted. Where I Learned to Look: Art from the Yard — Colorado Springs event
May 30, 2026, 4:00 AM

Where I Learned to Look: Art from the Yard

Where I Learned to Look: Art from the Yard celebrates the foundational role of yards in shaping contemporary art in America. Building upon existing scholarship on Yard Art, artwork created to exist in the transitional space between the home and wider world, artist and art historian Josh T Franco examines the lineage of this robust American art form. Featuring over 30 works, the exhibition spotlights both community and academically taught artists over the past five decades including David Driskell, vanessa german, Donald Judd, and Finnegan Shannon, revealing connections across communities in creative world-building with what is available. Where I Learned to Look: Art from the Yard was originally produced by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania. The exhibition was made possible by the Katherine and Keith L. Sachs Guest Curator Program, and is supported at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College by the Catharine and Bart Holaday Endowment for Interactive Art. Where I Learned to Look: Art from the Yard is curated by artist and art historian Josh T Franco in partnership with Katja Rivera, Curator of Contemporary Art. Gifts That Shape Us — Colorado Springs event
May 30, 2026, 4:00 AM

Gifts That Shape Us

From the museum’s earliest days, gifts of art have shaped this institution and the permanent collection it stewards. More than half of the collection arrived through the generosity of artists, donors, and others who gifted important works or funds that have made key purchases possible. These acts of giving didn’t just add works; they defined the collection’s scope and vision. Alice Bemis Taylor’s foundational gift of art from the Southwest grounded the FAC in this region. Meredith Sage Hare’s donation of American modernist paintings and sculptures set sights on the avant-garde. Subsequent gifts have continued this dual commitment—grounded in the Southwest, attentive to what’s new—while also broadening the FAC’s collecting scope. This exhibition brings together gifts from across the museum’s ninety-year history, from foundational donations to recent acquisitions that continue shaping the collection today. Pieces of Me' and 'Human Made Art — Colorado Springs event

Pieces of Me' and 'Human Made Art

Featured in our gray gallery we have Shasta Laue! Shasta Laue is an artist who doesn’t like to speak in 3rd person so this is difficult af. Her interest in the arts comes from being raised by a wonderful artist who she calls mom. After getting a fancy piece of paper from UCCS in Art History, she worked in an art gallery where the real lessons of the art world began. Since then Shasta has just been making art, enjoying art, and most of all meeting the people in this world who are just as strange and beautiful as the art they create. That’s enough about her though, hope you enjoy her first solo show -Shasta Laue from ‘Pieces of Me’ Featured in our hall gallery we have Jess Lewis! “My name is Jess and I am a multi medium artist. I mainly paint and crochet but I also use pens, graphite, markers, and colored pencils. I create abstract sceneries full of bright bold colors with wild shapes and surreal portraits that capture the different aspects of the human body in a fun and unusual way. Making art is a way for me to hold onto the joys of being weird in a world that constantly strips us of our individuality.” -Jess Lewis on ‘Human Made Art’.
